Chapter 29 Excerpt:

Driscoll was wheeling a wheelbarrow full of manure over to the sump. He looked over at Dahlia and Artimus as they exited the farmhouse, followed by Matilda.

”After you’re done there, Driscoll, start getting the goats in. Do them first, because they can be hell to catch,” she said to the young man.

Driscoll was starting to think maybe he should have stayed in Damar and faced the music. His death would have been quicker.

Steede was over at the corral, touching noses with all of the mares while holding off the white stallion, who had no business sniffing around actual females. As a temporary creation, he might as well be a gelding. This was stud’s work.

”Steede, come on!” Artimus called to the stallion, who looked over at his master, his ears flattened in aggravation. He should have leapt into the corral when he had the chance. He probably could have mounted at least one of them, they were so stallion-starved.

”Fine,” the horse muttered. He nickered at the mares, then drove the white stallion before him by nipping at his perfect white flanks.  Steede returned to Artimus, grumbling slightly about not seeing a mare in ages.

Driscoll sighed and looked at Artimus and Dahlia longingly as they mounted up. His eyes seemed to say, “Please. Take me with you.
