Chapter 8 ~ Epilogue
Anna showed up for her assignment at Dr. Digmon’s office the next day anyway. He might be back, after all.
When faced with the doctor’s disappearance the previous day, like a
true temp, she handled his patients with flair, telling them he had
been called away to perform a delivery, and rescheduling their
appointments. She then typed up a sign to hang on the door outside that
said, “Doctor Gone On Delivery, Call to Reschedule” and locked the door.
After examining his office and noting the fire exit at the end of the
hall, she convinced herself that the two men had left through that exit
on some important emergency, and the crack she thought she heard was
the door slamming close. It worked as well as any other reason she
could come up with, and she didn’t want to report the doctor missing
when he wasn’t. Of course, his leaving without informing her was quite
rude, and left her at a disadvantage, but she handled herself just
fine. And she stayed her full hours as well, answering the phones and
making new appointments.
She tried the office door, and it was open. She entered and looked
around. Everything seemed in place. She walked to the door that led to
the back office and hit the buzzer button. She waited.
Dr. Digmon walked from the back, and opened the door, looking a bit
ruffled. He had a wide-eyed look about him, as if he were lost. He
looked up at her.
“Ah, good morning Miss Thistledown he said, stepping back to let her in.
“Good morning, Doctor,” Anna replied, looking him up and down, “where did you go yesterday?”
The doctor frowned.
“Well, I’m not sure Miss Thistledown. I seem to have misplaced my
memory concerning yesterday. The last thing I remember was talking to
Professor Snape, then suddenly I was in the patient waiting room, eight
hours later with an empty vial in my hand. I must have had some kind of
blackout, but I feel fine,” he said, looking at Anna and shrugging.
“That’s pretty strange, doctor.” Anna said, walking into the office and
taking out the big appointment book, “but as long as you didn’t return
covered in blood, I wouldn’t worry about it. Maybe you were just
over-worked or something and your body made you take a break. Any way,
you’re back now. Maybe what you did will come back to you over time.”
The doctor nodded. “Maybe,” he said doubtfully. He had a feeling he would never know where he went.
Anna sat down at the desk and noticed a package sitting on the counter. It was simply addressed to Dr. Digmon.
“Doctor, there’s a package here for you,” she said, looking at it curiously. The doctor walked into her office.
“Open it,” he said.
Anna turned it over and tried to open it. She couldn’t.
“It won’t open,”she said, confused. It was wrapped in plain brown
paper. She shouldn’t have had a problem, but it was like her hands
slipped off any time she tried to catch an end of the paper.
“Let me see it,” said Dr. Digmon. Anna passed him the package, and he
opened it easily. Inside were several thousand pound notes, and a piece
of parchment that read:
To Dr. Digmon for Services Rendered. Thank you.
Professor Snape and Wife
“Oh my God! That’s a lot of money, doctor! What in the world did you do for him?” she asked, looking at all the loot.
Dr. Digmon stroked his beard.
“I’m not sure. But obviously he was very, very satisfied with my work,”
he replied, eyeing the money. Then he scooped it up and headed for his
office. He looked back at Anna.
“Somehow I think I earned every bit of this,” he said with a wry smile,
thinking of the odd, over-protective Professor. “Every blooming pence.”
Then he entered his office and closed the door to count his money.
